Refurbishment of the Facade and Circulation Blocks of the A.C. Camargo Hospital

Founded in 1953, Hospital A.C. Camargo is one of the largest specialized and integrated centers for cancer diagnosis, treatment, education, and research, offering oncology services to both the private healthcare system and the Unified Health System (SUS).

Given the complex’s importance, Bacco developed a project for modernizing the facades and expanding the hospital’s circulation blocks, aiming to preserve the historical heritage of the city of São Paulo.

In Block A, a heritage-listed building designed by Rino Levi, the project includes the restoration of the facades and original paintwork, as well as the cladding of the building’s top, currently disfigured by modern equipment, to restore the visual integrity of the original design.

Meanwhile, in Block B, adjacent to Block A, the proposal includes reversible facade solutions, with minimal intervention in the existing structure, utilizing auxiliary metallic structures and modern claddings, such as perforated sheets, which address structural pathologies and update the aesthetics without compromising the ensemble’s character.

The connection between blocks A and B, formed by a narrower, non-heritage-listed volume, also received the same perforated cladding, ensuring visual unity and control of structural pathologies, in addition to preserving light permeability.

The overall objective is to modernize the hospital, remedy constructive pathologies, and preserve its historical and architectural value, reinforcing its importance as a center of excellence in oncology.
